The N.B. Rail Trail is a 4.2 mile spur line that runs from the live lines in East Brookfield. Behind the old shoe factory, to the depot in North Brookfield on Elm Street.
History: The railroad was built in the summer of 1875.( Kind of late in the railroad boom.) Its creation and establishment is well documented in a book by Elizabeth R. Hill. She details all the events and even the minutes of the town meetings! It’s in her book called Incidents and Appalling Trials and Treatment. This is a very interesting read. She was well educated and very upset about the creation of a railroad though her land. She explained how she was financially and emotionally destroyed by is creation. The town had her committed to an insane asylum.
